McClung Tobe Agar Base is a solid medium recommended for the isolation and cultivation of Clostridiumspp. Gelatin Peptone supplies nitrogenous sources. Dextrose is the fermentable carbohydrate. Egg Yolk Suspension reduces the toxic effect of organic peroxides that may accumulate and allows for the detection of lecithinase and lipase activities. Lecithin degradation produces an insoluble, opaque precipitate in the medium surrounding bacterial colonies. Lipase breaks down free fats, resulting in an iridescent sheen on the colony surface. Sodium Chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains the osmotic balance. Agar is the gelifying agent.
