The collection device determines what the laboratory can recover. Flocked swabs release substantially more cellular material than traditional wound fibre swabs, which matters for low-titre specimens. Transport medium must match the target: viral transport media preserve nucleic acid for molecular testing, while inactivating media render the sample non-infectious but rule out culture. For forensic work, dry collection with desiccant preserves DNA integrity over long storage. Confirm the medium is compatible with your downstream assay before standardizing on a device.
