Temperature ranges and what they store
- +2 to +8 °C — vaccines, reagents, blood products, pharmaceuticals
- −20 to −40 °C — enzymes, antibodies, routine reagent storage
- −86 °C ULT — cell lines, nucleic acids, proteins, long-term biobanking
- −150 °C cryogenic — stem cells and primary cells requiring storage below the glass transition point
Sizing and site requirements
ULT freezers draw significant power and reject substantial heat into the room. Confirm your circuit capacity and room ventilation before purchase — an undersized HVAC system will shorten compressor life and raise your running temperature.
Floor loading matters too: a filled upright ULT can exceed 700 lb. We coordinate freight delivery and placement for South Florida installations.
Alarms, monitoring and validation
Units include audible and visual alarms for temperature deviation, power failure and door ajar. Remote alarm contacts allow connection to building management or autodialer systems.
For CLIA, GMP and vaccine storage programmes, continuous temperature logging with independent probes is expected. We supply data loggers and can advise on mapping and qualification requirements.
Backup and contingency
A ULT failure can destroy years of work. CO₂ or LN₂ backup systems hold temperature during power loss or compressor failure. For irreplaceable collections, splitting samples across two units in different rooms remains the most reliable safeguard.
