IVF Culture Dish
An IVF culture dish is a dish within a dish. The inner 20 mm well holds the working drop of medium with the embryo; the outer 60 mm ring is filled with medium or oil to buffer it — a humidity and temperature moat that keeps the small central volume from evaporating or shifting osmolality during handling.
That matters more here than almost anywhere else in the laboratory: the volumes are microlitres, the material is irreplaceable, and a few minutes on a warm stage can change the medium enough to matter.
