Three shaking motions in one compact unit, selected by hand rather than by ordering a different instrument. The Yamato MK-161 converts between rotary, elliptical and reciprocating motion, each with a 30 mm stroke, anywhere from 20 to 200 rpm. Different samples want different paths: rotary for gas exchange in a culture, reciprocating for liquid–liquid extraction, elliptical as a compromise that keeps solids suspended without splashing. A laboratory that has to do all three normally buys two shakers.
The MK-161 is also small enough — 350 × 300 × 150 mm — to sit inside an incubator, which is exactly what Yamato does with it: the IN-604WMK pairs this shaker with a 143 L refrigerated incubator for temperature-controlled shaking work. On its own bench it offers a digital speed display and a digital timer that runs from 0.1 minute (6 seconds) to 99.9 hours, so a six-second mix and a four-day agitation are set the same way.
